Iconic Marine Sets Career on Fire

Wednesday, December 29, 2010 — Why, the casual visitor might ask, has it been so long since we’ve posted here?

Well, we’ve been waiting for something as juicy as this, that’s why: videotape of Geico Insurance spokesperson R. Lee Ermey setting his career on fire in front of a live audience. We discovered this while perusing Reddit just now. We should have been wrapping up our latest outrage, which is due at the printer’s in less than 19 hours. What can we say? We’re bad.

Here’s a link to the original post at Windy City Watch, or just click on the picture above for the full video.

Or, to avoid a couple of minutes of extraneous music, just click on the arrow below for the audio of Ermey’s rant. The red meat portion of it starts at about 1:03 and goes to 2:00. We left his intro about Toys for Tots in there for context.

Or, you could take advantage of our fetish for transcription, and just read what Ermey said starting at the 1:03 point:

“… it’s time for Tots for Tots …

“I got to tell you folks, we’re having a big problem this year.

“The economy really sucks.

“Now, I hate to point fingers at anybody but the present administration probably had a lot to do with that.

“And the way I see it they’re not going to quit doing it until they bring this country to its knees. So I think we should all rise up, and we should stop this administration from what they’re doing because they’re destroying this country.

“They’re driving us into bankruptcy so that they can impose socialism on us, and that’s exactly what they’re doing and I’m sick and damned tired of it and I know you are too.

“But I know that the Marine Corps is going to be here forever — this administration won’t. Semper Fi. God bless you all. Hoorah.”

  1. I never saw Full Metal Jacket. Only the Geico ad. He is a likable guy in his own way. Just like Reagan and Schwarzenegger. This was just the kind of theatrics that Republicans can’t resist! A big WWF-like entrance, and a presentation was part Vince McMahon and part Benny Hinn. Factually he demonstrated the same kind of denial and buck passing all the Republicans seem to be doing now. Of course most of them are only misinformed because they choose to get all thier information from only one source. I hate to point any fingers, but there is an ocean of misinformation being dumped on the general population by a certain network. The truth is a Republican President was in charge when we invaded the wrong country in March 2003, let Osama Bin Laden get away, and began this insane run up of the national debt by not taking responsibility and paying for it. A Republican President announced the $700 billion big bank bailout in September 2008. Barak Obama didn’t become President until January 20, 2009! Republicans are also fond of saying that Ronald Reagan was our finest President. He also complained about big government, then proceded to run up a record national debt. Does anyone see a pattern here?

  2. I always get tickled when I hear a career military guy ranting about “socialism.” Uh, dude, where do you think your uniforms, your chow and your medical care come from? Who do you think provided your barracks, your NCO quarters and your travel money? You guys are the No. 1 Champion Undisputed Recipients of Socialism! I realized that my first year in the Field Artillery. I guess it takes the Gyrenes a bit longer.

You say “the Marine Corps is going to be here forever.” Yeah, because the taxpayers pay for it! Did you really think the Marine Corps is an independent for-profit corporation?

  3. If only it were that easy to blame one administration or one man. The sad fact is we are in the position we are because of multiple administrations were allowed to run roughshod over our country and our system. Idiots who think they can blame only Democrats or ignorants who think they can blame only Republicans are sheep being herded around and sadly, they deserve what we have.

Public discourse and open discussions can help educate folks to a level where we can start actually implementing real change. So thanks for posting this…maybe if enough people take interest, we can make a difference.

  4. Military people try to steer clear of politics because they serve under civilian leaders and leaders need to be able to trust the men under their command or those men tend to get killed. R Lee Ermey must be in a panic to break from this convention. He senses what we all do: There is a lack of leadership in this country, and someone needs to kick us in the pants before we wake up and the country looks like Greece.

Socialism starts out by taking care of those in need and building a fair framework we can all live in. As our lives change, a job loss transforms many from caregiveing taxpayer to a needy economic zombie. As the welfare state grows, the framework becomes a cage hampering our movement until we are completely still. The worst part is that the cage needs to rot away before we can move again. The whole cycle can take 50 years.

We went down this path in the 1970s and leaders rose up to help pull ourselves up by our bootstraps. Ermey is trying to catalyze such a response.

  5. Notice this: the crowd overwhelmingly cheered what he was saying. Liberal media outlets may try to discredit R. Lee for what he said, but, the groundswell of US Citizens are right there with him in their views. I hope Obama’s handlers shield him from this video, because its yet another sign that the future won’t be kind to him OR his administration. Congrats, R. Lee!
