Who are OccupyMARINES? Who is Xervarian?

Monday, October 17, 2011 — Anyone who has read our coverage of the Occupation knows we’re not objective. We’re for it. And we don’t want anything bad to happen to it. Which is why we’re concerned about Twitter user @OccupyMARINES.

In a world where nobody on the Internet knows you’re a dog, things are not always as clear cut as we might like. Take occupybaltimore.com and www.occupyparty.org, for example.

No doubt there are many former service members present at the Occupations whose intentions and actions are above reproach. But to unquestioningly assume that everyone is who they say they are would be reckless. Take this guy, for example.

In just three days @OccupyMARINES has pumped out 781 posts, many IN ALL CAPS and exuding testosterone. The central message seems to be, let’s get some real brawlers in between the Occupiers and the Police. Nobody asked us, but we’d rather see Quakers in that position, or members of Veterans for Peacepeople clearly committed to nonviolence.

As far as we’ve been able to discern, OccupyMARINES seems to be Xervarian.

Last year in response to this article about the firing of General McChrystal, Xervarian replied to the following remark:

Tim Berry
Does anyone think it’s appropriate for a full blown alcoholic to be running our war effort in Afghanistan?
The culture of alcoholism is prevalent in our military services…..
Too bad society looks the other way…..until it’s too late…..
McCrystal had plenty of chances…..he’s lost it……..

Xervarian
Man I sure hope you served in the military because had you not you need to shut your mouth and thank people like this so called alcoholic for doing what so many lazy %^& Americans can’t or won’t do and stand up and be apart of something bigger, serving a cause outside of self gain. Please people if your trash and never served you haven’t earned the right of the 2nd Amendment so keep your mouth shut.

Not sure this represents the Occupation in a good light.

In a response to a deleted comment Xervarian replies:

Well I am no longer a service member and will say whatever it is I wish to say to anyone. To begin, I don’t read Rolling Stone for that very reason, the writer’s have no talent, the editor’s are worthless, and the owner’s should be put down like dogs for allowing this farce to occur. Rolling Stone, I guarantee I will do what is in my power to ensure your magazine is out of schools and off the shelves. As far as obama and Bite Me with the rest of the entire White House Staff who Obviously Have ZERO clue on what they are doing. McCrystal is someone they should listen to rather then be attempting to shut him up. Pathetic that we as voters were lied to and fed into this man’s agenda, obama. Shameful, Capitol Hill is Shameful. and I still have to pay money for the lot, disappointment.

Rolling Stone’s “owner’s should be put down like dogs for allowing this farce to occur”?

Somebody needs a refresher course in nonviolence.
