Thursday, April 19, 2012 — The following item ran in our “Admiral Fowle’s Piscataqua River Tidal Guide (Not for Navigational Purposes)” for this date:
“1775 — Minutemen and British clash in Lexington. Zechariah Fowle’s former apprentice Isaiah Thomas is there.”
We will be forever in the debt of Isaiah Thomas for a couple of reasons: like every other American, for his service to the patriot cause; and, as stewards of this newspaper, for his most excellent first-hand account, in his History of Printing, of growing up in the household of Zechariah Fowle and witnessing, at a very young age, the oppression of Zechariah’s brother Daniel Fowle in the Monster of Monsters incident.
