Wednesday, August 7 — So, how we doing on that regular posting thing? Oh, yeah …
Well, here’s our excuse:
Almost done: sixteen pages of truly free press; due at the printer’s on Thursday afternoon, and on the streets the next day, multiplied by about 5,500, given away free, supported by small advertisers and subscribers. No grants, no non-profit nervous nellies worrying about who’ll be offended, no IRS 501 (c) 3 fine print to dance around.
Our Starving Artiste, Mike Dater, just now alerted us to a stirring rant by John Pilger on how desperately the world needs real journalism. Here Pilger talks mostly about content, and real freedom of speech.
“I believe a fifth estate is possible, the product of a people’s movement, that monitors, deconstructs, and counters the corporate media. In every university, in every media college, in every news room, teachers of journalism, journalists themselves need to ask themselves about the part they now play in the bloodshed in the name of a bogus objectivity. Such a movement within the media could herald a perestroika of a kind that we have never known. This is all possible.” — John Pilger
What we’re talking about here is the form — small, cheap tabloid newspapers given away free — a form that takes the message that last foot and a half, from a piece of cheap paper in the hands of anybody and everybody, through their eyeballs, and right into their hearts and minds.
