Wednesday, August 18, 2010 — This critical message just came in from Ben Porter of Save Our Bridges! Apparently the community has a window of slightly more than two days in which to express its support for the Memorial and Sarah Mildred Long Bridges.

I have just received a request from Bob Landry and the NH Department of Transportation for our support. He is in the final phases of submitting the required documentation for the request for TIGER II funding from the Federal Government. One [part] of the application is an indication of the support from the local community. This e-mail is a request for each of you to send an e-mail of support for this critical funding initiative.
DEADLINE: FRIDAY AUGUST 20!
It appears that both Maine and New Hampshire will cooperate in this critical application for funding. The letter from Governor Baldacci is due to the NH DOT this afternoon. So now we seem to have both states moving in the same direction.
What each of you needs to do is to click the following link, and in the text of your email indicate your support for the “Portsmouth-Kittery Memorial Bridge Replacement Project”. Your support should indicate your reasons for the replacement of the Bridge. To help you along, here is a list of potential subjects you can choose from:
1 – Economic – what it will do for Portsmouth, Kittery, and the Seacoast Economy
2 – Social – How it connects the communities, congregations,
3 – Artistic – The bridge provides both access to art, and is the subject of art
4 – Life Style – Pedestrian and Bicycle access between the two municipalities, including racing events
5 – Sustainability – Creating an environment that encourages low carbon activities
6 – Tourism – Creating another tourist attraction for the Seacoast

Please do all you can to save both bridges. I not only believe in saving or replacing the “Memorial” to our men and women of the armed services, I also use both as a commuting route. In doing so I frequently visit the business’ on both sides, and I am sure in these hard times they appreciate the patronage.
