News Noise

Monday, February 15, 2009 — For the better part of an hour, helicopters have been circling over the Hilton Gardens Hotel in Portsmouth, covering a carbon monoxide incident. One woman was reported to have been found unresponsive, and eleven people have been treated for symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure. Everyone in the downtown area has been subjected to more than an hour of gratuitous noise.

A Lost Vista

Saturday, December 26, 2009 — Yesterday’s post reminded us of a short video we shot a little over a year ago. Here it is: the salt ship Hato (Nassau), leaving Portsmouth Harbor, as seen through the gap between two buildings on Bow Street. Friday, December 25, 2009 — The gift no one wanted, and which will be taken away all to soon: a view upstream from Bow Street, towards the Mildred Long and the Piscataqua River Bridges, across the space where the Martingale once stood.

Bruce and the Raven

Monday, October 26, 2009 — During Undead Beat Night at The Press Room, in support of the Portsmouth Halloween Parade, Bruce Pingree delivers Lord Buckley‘s version of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven, accompanied by Larry Simon and Groove Bacteria.

Vigilance and Dedication

Friday, October 16, 2009 — Last night the Portsmouth Fire Department dedicated Vigilance, a sculpture and fountain by New Hampshire artist Emile Birch, located just outside the Central Fire Station. Below: after playing at the ceremony, a band of pipers gave a well-received impromptu performance as they left the Rusty Hammer.

Another Fifteen Minutes

Wednesday, October 14, 2009 — One of our favorite places got some love from the Boston Globe this morning. The daily’s “g” section featured a piece by Clara Silverstein headlined “Novel approach to a bakery central to Portsmouth, N.H.” It was about Ceres Bakery, of course — what other place could fit that description? By way of a salute on this auspicious occasion, we present the photo at right, showing proprietress Penny Brewster wearing a tasty chapeau during the 2002 Halloween Parade.
