Memorial Bridge Survey Results Released

Monday, March 2, 2009—We now have available for download a 1.3 MB pdf file of the results of Benjamin S. Porter’s Memorial Bridge Survey. So far as we know, the Maine and New Hampshire Departments of Transportation never took the trouble to ask people how important the bridge might be to them. UNH statistics instructor Porter did, though. His MBA students have analyzed the results and summarized them in this report. It appears to us that the results strongly favor rehabilitating the bridge. While we’re at it, we’ve also posted our paper of February 13, 2009 (Vol. CCLIII, No. 10).You can download a pdf of …

Kittery Wish List Update 3

Wednesday, February 18, 2009—Thanks to a visitor from up—or is that down—the coast a ways, we have two more suggestions for distribution sites in Kittery. Thanks, Elizebeth—and keep an eye out for that dreaded red “Expiring” sticker! We now have nine locations on our Wish List, but we know there are other places that could be added. Don’t hold back! The Current List: Beach Pea Baking Co. Carl’s Meat Market Chef’s Cove Cafe (formerly the Crooked Lane), Chun Ping Lau Restaurant Golden Harvest 7-Eleven at the wee Kittery rotary Starbucks at the outlet The Navy Yard pub Tulsi (the Indian restaurant).

Did It Again

Friday, February 13, 2009—It may not seem like that big a deal, but at our age, just getting out onto the street again is kind of a thrill. Our Vol. CCLIII, No. 10 is being distributed right now. Fortunately, not all the sidewalks in town look like the one at right today. But even if they did, our stalwart distribution crew would no doubt take it in stride. In other self-referential news, a pdf (2.8 MB) of our previous issue has just been posted here. In it, we cover the Inauguration we feared might not happen, noting that Obama’s address to the nation echoed, among …

Kittery Wish List Update 2

Tuesday, February 10, 2009—Well, now—maybe we’re getting somewhere. Our call for suggested Gazette distribution locations in Kittery got off to a slow start, but as soon as we made it clear there was no need for the nominator to know the owners or operators, Michelle Moon suggested four places. That brings our total to seven. Thanks, Michelle! The Current List: Beach Pea Baking Co. Carl’s Meat Market Chef’s Cove Cafe (formerly the Crooked Lane), Golden Harvest Starbucks at the outlet The Navy Yard pub Tulsi (the Indian restaurant). We know there are more places, but we want to grow this thing organically, so use that …

Kittery Wish List Update

Sunday, February 8, 2009—A while back we proposed that our readers let us know where in Kittery we ought to be distributing the Gazette. So far, we have received a total of three suggestions, from one reader. First, we’ll list those suggestions, then we’ll announce a change designed to get more response. Here’s the list as it stands: Chef’s Cove Cafe (formerly the Crooked Lane), Golden Harvest, and Starbucks at the outlet. Our thanks to Chip for sending those in. Now, we were anticipating more of a response. But we think we may know why we didn’t get it. In our appeal we said that …

Save Our Bridge?

Friday, February 6, 2009—We heard a hint that there might be some citizens hereabouts who want to save Memorial Bridge, home to the bronze eagle shown here. The officials in charge of such things seem ready to spend eighteen months and two million dollars studying the bridge, with an eye to scrapping it. Since we’re already in the process of trying to expand our distribution into Kittery, and since the loss of the bridge would represent an additional obstacle in that already formidable task, we have compiled a list of links to all the relevant news stories we could find on the topic of the …
